Work Orientation Self-Assessment for Senior Executives

The methodology

The framework draws on Amy Wrzesniewski's tripartite model of work orientation (Yale School of Management), which distinguishes three fundamentally different relationships people have with their work: Job, Career, and Calling. Wrzesniewski's research has shown that these orientations distribute roughly evenly across professions, meaning that within any given role, you'll find people relating to that work in three very different ways. Mismatch between underlying orientation and the kind of role someone holds is one of the most-cited causes of mid-career burnout among senior leaders.

Why it matters at the senior level

Senior executive roles are systematically optimised for Career orientation.
