Burnout vs. Fatigue Self-Assessment for Senior Executives

This assessment is designed for senior leaders who want to understand whether what they're experiencing is normal fatigue, accumulated overload, or genuine burnout — three categories that look superficially similar but have very different implications for what to do next.

The methodology

The framework draws on Christina Maslach's burnout research, specifically the Maslach Burnout Inventory, which has been the academic gold standard for measuring burnout since 1981 and validated across hundreds of studies. The MBI's three-dimensional model (exhaustion, cynicism, efficacy) is combined here with elements of the Areas of Worklife Scale (workload, values alignment) to help distinguish work-driven burnout from burnout-like patterns with causes outside work.

Why it matters at the senior level

Senior executives are particularly vulnerable to misdiagnosing their own state. Years of high performance create a habit of pushing through, which works for fatigue but accelerates burnout. Many executives who eventually crash describe months or years of trying to "rest harder" before realising rest wasn't the missing piece. Naming the pattern early matters because the early-stage interventions are different from the late-stage ones.
